Have you noticed? It's that time of the year when everything in sight seems to be covered with 'sale' signs. Anywhere you look there is something you can get at a 15, 25, or even 50 percent discount, but for a limited time only, of course. We all are intelligent people and know that sales come and go at a regularity of clockwork, but still merchants manage to pull the right strings and sway us into spending frenzy like there's no tomorrow. At a bargain price many things may seem especially attractive, but try to pull yourself together when searching for something that might end up close to your skin. Don't try to buy the supposedly best mineral makeup at any price without reading this.
Of course you've heard that mineral makeup is all the rage amongst women wanting more from cosmetics and searching for something that is actually good for their skin. And it does have qualities that places the best mineral makeup on a higher level of cosmetics altogether. It doesn't just cover imperfections without clogging pores, the best mineral makeup actually heals the skin, provides natural sunblock and is safe to use on a very sensitised skin after plastic surgery. This hypoallergenic makeup variety has been proclaimed a welcome breakthrough in skin care of oily or dry types, acne, rosacea and broken capillaries. But there are also some sceptics around, questioning mineral makeup products and their originality, as well as suggesting that the same ingredients where technically used in cosmetics industry for decades. Confusing, isn't it?
The truth is that mineral makeup products vary dramatically not only in price but, what's more important, also in their formative formulas and ingredients. With regulations over what constitutes 'mineral' makeup virtually absent, there are two major divisions amongst brands under the mineral makeup banner; those that are maintaining the original intent of pure mineral makeup by eliminating regular 'irritants' and chemicals, and those that actually market their products as such, regardless of the fact that they contain a set of 'less natural' or synthetic ingredients. Therefore, when trying to identify the best mineral makeup pay attention to the first six ingredients on the label of a product that you are about to buy. It's simple, if you cannot pronounce the major components of the product they are not natural, stay away from it.
Another split, this time within the 'natural' cosmetics camp, is between mineral makeup containing bismuth oxycholoride and/or talc in their formulas, and that which does not. Some of the supposedly best mineral makeup brands are using both of these elements as fillers or binders in their products. Although a mineral, bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing and is considered to be an irritant that causes itching, rashes and cystic acne if applied excessively. Similarly, a lot of conventional makeup lines containing talc have been labeled 'mineral', the problem is it's a common allergen. So, do not expect a miracle from the so-called best mineral makeup that contains talc if your skin is already unhappy wearing mainstream cosmetics. Learn to avoid it.
There is another mineral that a number of women believe to be sensitive to - mica. Used as the anti-aging component that deflects attention from skin irregularities, mica is an inert element and not an allergen. But too large particles of mica that could be used in some eye shadows, for example, to add that catchy sparkle, can irritate sensitive skin if excessively rubbed. In which case, try to alter your makeup application method or tools.
All in all, if you happen to have a sensitive skin, start your exploration of any mineral cosmetic with a sample size makeup. But whatever you do whilst browsing through sales offers, avoid picking up something that looks like the best mineral makeup at a bargain price without making an informed choice. Be aware and you will discover the more beautiful, glamorous you. And just imagine what your friends will have to say about that...
